1. Way to Go
(Demel)

Jenny lives on the west side of town, I bet she’s already home
I live on the east side of town, I’ve got a long row to hoe

Cause I’ve got a long way to go
I’ve got a long way to go

In the hands of the infinite lie the rivers of time
Every level overlapping itself hard to tell which one’s mine

Cause I’ve got a long way to go
I’ve got a long way to go

I’ll be the last, I’ll be the last one, I’ll be last one home

I told three prayers before morning about what I cannot say
The greatest gifts come without warning silver and gold fade away

The hero wins what the hero has lost by the of the story
And does this bridge o’er the Rubicon cross on a train bound for glory?

2. Witness
(Roper)

Time falls, it reels and call, but I shall be your witness through it all

Tears break, in craters and lakes, but I shall be your witness through it all

There is heart, then there’s thought

First take flight and then get caught

No one knows and no one sees the poet forest for the poetry

Love makes it table with mistakes, but I shall be your witness through it all

3. Looks Like Illinois
(Roper)

Well I dreamed I was alone again and on my own
And floated like a black winged bird o’er the fields I’d grown
And it came to me a sound so sweet it was carried on the wind
Oh it looks like Illinois but sounds like Ireland

And since you’ve had your way with me oh tell me what to do
I cannot shake these sounds about or lose the sight of you
I’m a simple boy with a simple plan of a place where peace begins
Oh it looks like Illinois but sounds like Ireland

Toe to toe and heel to heel you dance with ghosts indeed
On the ground that’s sown with pearls not but fiddles in the seed
So clear your mind and close your eyes sit quiet and pretend
Oh it looks like Illinois but sounds like Ireland

And when I get to heaven I’ll have Jesus by for tea
And sit and count my blessings as the angels call to me
“Come chase us across the prairie grass, sing ‘oh danny boy’ again”
Oh it looks like Illinois but sounds like Ireland

4. Mobile
(Lader)

I’m a mobile on a string made up of all kinds of colorful found things
These wires beaten flat on some old railroad track where a good train left behind
This battered find and promised to come back
Head northward again sometime…

A mobile on a string, I move with wings like a circus of acrobats join in thin air
High above the earth below they cheer they mourn for those tricks I can do
I’m spinning stunned by my act, misconstrued

A mobile on a string, I float, I sing, and I cry as the wind whips my sails
My hands may reach out to grasp the stars, my feet they may give way
I may trip the scales, falling, falling, suspended in my own space of air

I’m a mobile on a string, and loving you has been a fragile thing
We can spin and sing around strike a balance with the things we found
Like torn wings of boneyard petals and beaten threads of railroad metal

5. Everybody’s Gotta
(Roper)

Everybody’s had a hard year and everybody’s had an awkward phase
And everybody’s got a hairdo that they didn’t have yesterday
Everybody’s has a need to witness paranoia and who last kissed us
Everybody but you, everybody but you
Cause you don’t know can’t quite figure out what it is you want to do

Everybody’s got tiny headphones to listen to everyone’s cds upon
Like sons of the never wrong so everybody can sing along
And everybody’s in a hell of bind not getting everything done on time
Everybody but you, everybody but you
Cause you don’t know can’t quite figure out what it is you want to do

And every night all day long I call you up you’re never home
Saying let’s go disco dancing the penny circus is back in town
Take a slow boat to China hell let’s just walk the dog around
But no, no, no, no, no you don’t know what it is you want to do

Everybody’s wearing their souls out it’s what everybody’s talking about
At the fork in the road with free will you’d be standing there wondering still
Everybody’s at the five and dime chocolate chips and a bottle of wine
Everybody but you, everybody but you
Cause you don’t know can’t quite figure out what it is you want to do

6. Queen of Today
(Demel)

Where there’s no pain and no more sorrow
Yesterday is today and next Thursday tomorrow
Where the sound of those mean things I said and hurtful nights
Are the lash you blew off of my cheek to make things just right, just right

Cause I am queen of today
Not yesterday not yesterday
All the world will turn and say
There goes the queen of today
Queen of today

And if I had one wish back down on the earth
I’d fly back in time to the place of my birth
And I would live the whole thing over I’d make all the same mistakes
If it meant it could lead to the day I saw your face your face

Cause I am queen of today
Not yesterday not yesterday
All the world will turn and say
There goes the queen of today
Queen of today

Oh to be, oh to be an Indian in India
Oh to be, oh to be a monk in Peru
I’d have some many lifetimes, more than just one short lifetime with you

Cause I am queen of today
Not yesterday not yesterday
All the world will turn and say
There goes the queen of today
Queen of today

7. If You Come to Take Me
(Roper)

If you come to take me I will not go
If you come to take me I will not go
If you come to take me I will not go
I have been there and it just isn’t fair
You’re breaking my heart don’t you know

I’ll close my eyes and refuse to see
I’ll close my eyes and refuse to see
I’ll close my eyes and refuse to see
I will be blind to the sorrows this time
You’re breaking my heart don’t you know

For too many years, for too many years
You took all you could from me you took all that was good for me
For too many years, for too many years
You turned to me you ran to me you held back your hand to me
And you begged me to follow you there

With all of your riches I’d rather be poor
With all of your riches I’d rather be poor
With all of your riches I’d rather be poor
Nothing to gain no need to explain
You’re breaking my heart don’t you know

I’ll run like a madman and hide like a thief
I’ll run like a madman and hide like a thief
I’ll run like a madman and hide like a thief
Far and away and there I will stay
You’re breaking my heart don’t you know

For too many years, for too many years
You took all you could from me you took all that was good for me
For too many years, for too many years
You turned to me you ran to me you held out your hand to me
And you begged me to follow you there

8. Toast
(Lader)

It’s starts it’s life as bread wondering how long it will stay on the shelf
Then in the nick of time before the mold and moths and slime
A kilowatt of energy saves it with a coil of heat in the
Toaster is an ancient machine goes back in time

Escargot are snails from France they move too slow to disco dance
It’s rainy days they love the most
At country clubs they’re served with

Toast and jelly with you lover, if it burns then just start over

Toasted it’s what happens to you on your wedding day
How they can’t believe how grown up you are after being such a nerd etcetera
Humiliated in front of all your friends by your relatives who are
Toasted is a state of mind
Next morning you don’t feel so fine

He stayed home from work today so he could paint a picture of a piece of toast
It was blue cubist in style
I thought he could call it: Toast point, blue period or just plain:
Toast

9. Italy
(Roper)

Her brown eyes they are lost to me
Across the sea
Is it these dreams we’ll find this heart of mine?

It’s three in the morning in Italy
I’m all alone and it’s so far
She’s gone away

There’s an ocean between us that lies awake
It won’t forgive us all our mistakes
She’s gone away

Hear my sweet sad tune bella luna
Bring her soon please bella luna
Write me a letter of being lonely
Send me one telling of your love
All the bridges we have climbed
The reasons and the rhymes
Ti amo baby Dove il cuore

10. Frankie
(Demel)

My cousin Frankie drove a hearse as his everyday car
And when love went from bad to worse
He hung himself next to the basement bar
Blink, blink went the Christmas lights on his zoot-suit pants
And before he left from here to there he did a goodbye dance

Frankie could not get away from his heart
Just like you cannot get away from your arms

Frankie

And rain it goes up as dew and it comes down as snow
Hot chocolate is much improved with small marshmallows
My neighbors hung Christmas lights and a big santa face
He just whispered, “all hope is gone it’s just been misplaced”

And sometimes I cannot get away from my sad
But in the morning time things never seem quite as bad

Frankie

11. Pocket
(Roper)

Take your hand from your pocket place it gently near your heart
Take your pocket from your nightstand that it might run away in the dark
Take your nightstand out in the hallway for those that pass that there they might see
But don’t ever please don’t ever take your love from me

Take those who pass out on the hilltop so that they may know the raven’s air
Take the hilltop to a the different world let it run with the rivers and no one would care
Take the different world from your sandal, caught there as you are running near the sea
But don’t ever please don’t ever take your love from me

Take the different world and put it on your nightstand that you might remember where you’d been
Take it from your nightstand put it in your pocket that you might pass this way again
Take your hand out of pocket place it gently where I know your heart to be
But don’t ever please don’t ever take your love from me

12. Sister
(Lader)

Sister on a swing
Push you til the noon bell rings
Biding time before the day our time comes to run away

Sister, tenderly
Whisper every wish you see
In leaves that change on wishing tree
In sister tongue silent speak

When it rains it pours
Then light pours in from every corner
Of the room where you were born

Sister, wait for me
Sister born in honesty
Sharing gifts steps mistaken
Broken hearted dreams forsaken

Sister, honestly
I have only seen believed
In never ending unpretendings
Seven songbirds have your wings

In your dreams you will fly
And below you there will I be crying
“Come home soon”
Echoes round the room

Sister you are mine
Sister for the all of time
Standing at the edge are we
Daughters of our history

13. Variations
(Roper)

The is no country there is no country there is no country left in me
Or great pretender, falling waters, falling waters to concede
And I shall walk with my own beating, my own beating heart surrounded
Build then a bridge to step me over, step me over and lay me down

Variations, variations, variations on a theme
You give your heart with reservations
I give my reservations with my dreams

And I saw Peter at the station at the station upside down
And he told stories each variation each variation no less profound
And I said Peter “where’s your youth man?”
He said “our youth is gone damn it all
But I kept the penknife and the sweater and of course old jack the dog”

The mask of winter has no sorrow the mask of summer knows no shame
And we shall coil our destinations, this mortal coil be all that remains
And on the right hand stands the lovers on the left are those who seek
And we shall dance in conversation ‘til our tongues no more can speak

14. Forever On
(Roper)

When I die smile for me smile for me and do not cry
Cause I will be so happy I’ll get to live eternity by your side

And when I’m gone say a prayer light a candle and sing a song
I’ll be the wind to blow it, words to the song the poet for ever on

Forever on
Grace be no illusion faith be no pretender
Half the moon bewildered
And the other half remembered
Call me now and I’ll come running to you
Forever on

When in time, someone calls your name you turn around and no one’s there
It’s just me I’m teasing in a world of words and reason but that’s not fair

And late at night when the supper things are done you’re all alone there by the fire
That’s me the glow in the ember the warmth from the cold defender and the light above
