Three Good Reasons

Three Good Reasons

TGR-wp
1. Three Good Reasons
(Roper)

And Mary was amazed that they would ever even meet
But god her help he sought his trinity to complete
And god said to Mary
Dear Mary please trust me what I’m about to do
But I’ve got three good reasons
Three good reasons
Three good reasons
And one of them is you

And there are three sisters
One prayer, one hymn, one graces
Whose countenance is required in whole or part
And often found in quite places
They will stand and watch over your shoulder
Smile on and see you through
Cause they’ve got three good reasons
Three good reasons
Three good reasons
And one of them is you

And where the ocean meets the land everything seems to rise and fall
You get caught up in all the motion
And never hear the simple things when they call
Oh you can stand out on a mountain top
And why the sky’s so blue
But that’s cause there are three good reasons
Three good reasons
Three good reasons
And one of them is you

2. Dead
(Roper)

Wonder, wonder, wonder why?

Well I’m dead on the highway at 25
Oh momma it was so good to be alive
Got a wife at home you know she survived
Now I’m dead on the highway at 25

Well I’m dead on the highway at 26
Oh momma won’t you pick up and stitch
Me a blanket to lay me down
It may be cold where I’m bound

Well I’m dead on the highway at 27
BMW’s such a nice ride to heaven
But I’d rather be walking and talking instead of
Dead on the highway at 27

Well I’m dead on the highway at 28
“Rest in Peace” reads my vanity plates
But I hate it when I do this I get so irate
Well I’m dead on the highway at 28

Well I’m dead on the highway at 29
Me and the boys were just havin a good time
Actin a little silly and drinkin a little wine
Now I’m dead on the highway at 29

We was out on a date in my daddy’s car
I’d polished up the chrome we hadn’t gone far
At the top of the hill was a thunderbird ford
A coupe de ville and a jaguar
“The ford thinks he’s bad” said the coupe de ville
The jaguar was in for the thrill
Then it was back on the highway at Dillman’s Grove
The gals rode shotgun and the guys all drove
Then the xke hit 105
With the tbird ford right by his side
And the coupe de ville made a hard right swerve as the trio booked for deadman’s curve

3. Alone in the Wake
(Roper)

Well I smile when I see you, seems silly to mention
But hardly a moment gets by
And if you start to worry, a word to beginners,
Try not to look in her eyes

And why did I love you when I knew that I couldn’t
And you’d whisper softly that maybe that I shouldn’t
I’ve had to stand here alone in the wake
Spreading my wings about my mistakes… sadly
Like a songbird… crying

I lie here I’m waiting, the window it’s open
The moon moves in and out of the clouds
But you on your pillow are dancing but lonely
Though you dare not take wing and fly

And why did I love you when I knew that I couldn’t
And you’d whisper softly that maybe that I shouldn’t
I’ve had to stand here alone in the wake
Spreading my wings about my mistakes… sadly
Like a songbird… crying

Given all love can say… given all love can do
You know it never ever ever ever helped me find my way
Concerning you… concerning you

The letters here written from water were taken
And the water was drawn of my blood
With the issues confronted, it’s left me a donor
Wild at the thought of your hand…

4. Guitar Song
(Walker)

I’m coming back on bended knee
You’re always waiting there patiently for me
Some days I’m restless, I’m worn
With you it doesn’t matter much
You’ll stay the same while I’m caught in the storm

Quiet in the corner you’ll stay
Content like that ‘til I find my way to you
You’ve brought out sugar and spice
Helped the healing when things weren’t right
And still you’re my best friend
And you can count on me til the end

It’s the simple things that tear us apart
You’re strong and always there but with me I come and go
Depending on my heart
And yet we still come back to the pleasure of each other’s company
Telling stories in a certain kind of way
How we’ve lived out our lives day by day
Day by day

5. Set All God’s Chilren Free
(Roper)

Well when Moses was a baby he was saved by the river Nile
And 80 years later god came to him and said
“Lead my people out of exile”
From the mountaintops to the promised land
His prayers would always be
“Set all god’s children free”

And when Lincoln came to Illinois
He communed by the might mississip
And as he drank he realized the river Jordan at his lips
The river rose up and it begged of him “when these waters reach the sea
Set all god’s children free”

When crazy horse was pardoned by the white men from this earth
His spirit rose, Sioux legend goes, and it cried out at his birth
“Won’t you bury my heart beside the waters of the creek called wounded knee
And set all god’s children free”

Listen, listen to the waters of today
It’s a million tears that make the river run, compassion makes it stay
And it will sing to you a thousand songs of thought and word and deed
And set all god’s children free

6. Tiny Blue Flowers
(Roper)

Seems like the hardest thing I’ve ever done
Keeping the both of us fair
Standing in place when I feel I should run
Trying to prove I still care

And I’ve had to face all these days that I knew were coming
I’d pretend it was sorrow that kept you away
Crying there day after day after day
And I’ll be over much older I promised I told her
There is so much that’s so hard to understand
And I’ll be over much older those tears on my shoulder
When this young boy is finally a man

I remember these hours that I was alone
I remember those hours that year
And asked not a thing of the friends I had known
And they not a thing of my tears

Tiny blue flowers on a table for two
A silence that hangs in the air
A whisper that says what we already knew
And that’s keeping the both of us fair

7. Tattoo
(Roper)

Lonely but lonely, you wander and wander
Life’s become a ritual of pain
You try every angle, relationships tangle
It’s always so drastically the same

Small but small things, talk it all rings
I can’t remember when life became so blind
But then I found her, one chance in a million
The girl with a tattoo like mine

The girl with the tattoo like mine
The fates and the fury had answered my prayers
I thought it an original, I thought it one of a kind
Til I fell in love with the girl with the tattoo just like mine
Til I fell in love with the woman with a tattoo like mine

Now it was at the grocery… how can I explain this?
She leaned over the empty her cart
And I could all way to the express lane (if you know what I mean)
And there it was right next to her heart
Her blues my blues, our greens were the same
A simple but purposeful design
And then she caught me staring
And I said “I’ve got one of those”
To the girl with the tattoo like mine

Now some people find their soul mates
Others take up tennis
Some marry their childhood sweethearts and are done
But most if us are lonely, downhearted, distracted
But me, now I’ve got something in common with one

Through all the years, and all of the tears
Late at night in the dark life’s become a terroe
But now that she is here, things seems focused and clear

8. Place
(Walker)

An alley a back porch step a country mile
White water shore the border a stretch in a field
Battle ground parlor the wild west
Reservation the foothills off the beat and path
Between the poplars a gravel road Iowa

It’s one thing for you and another for me
And I’d give away all I own just to stay here with you

Derailed boxcar lonesome prairie running from home
The 98th meridian the pacific empty blue
Playground forest garden
448 4th avenue easy street city by the bay dump park traffic

It’s one thing for you and another for me
And I’d give away all I own just to stay here with you

Snow drift volcanic base the tetons chaos order fold
Dark mood nostalgia reality
In the grass when the sun fades rain on the way
Habit hunch accident

It’s one thing for you and another for me
And I’d give away all I own just to stay here with you

It’s the dew of youth
The response of age
And it’s feeling the same

9. Doing What I Like To Do
(Roper)

If I gave away kisses like dollars and dimes
One for you and one for you
Then I’d spend up my money and waste all my time
Doing what I like to do

If my pony had wheels we’d race up and down
Here and there and everywhere
And the girls would chase after when we come to town
Doing what I like to do

So color my backside with tattoos of ships
Of great fire-breathing dragon that rise from my hips
And I’ll be just like a garden, honey can’t resist
Doing what I like to do

If I ran through your hair like the rain from the sky
I’d wet you like the morning dew
And when I came to your shoulders, there I would lie
Doing what I like to do

And if the clocks all had hours that were five minutes more
Tic toc click clock
Then I’d beg you “please give me just one second more”
Doing what I like to do

So abandon your longings and dance recklessly
For the next one that loves you might look just like me
A trickster with honor to compromise thee
Doing what I like to do

Well all night all day, come early stay late
This night steal away, and I’ll build you a bed of amber and red
Or maybe some sunlight for your head

If the trees all had sparrows that sang love’s sweet song
Tweet tweet oh how sweet
Then I’d climb right up there and sing right along
Doing what I like to do

So let’s take off our shoes and run through the park
Watch the grass, see if we spark

10. Falling
(Roper)

Is it too late… falling falling
It is our fate… all is all is
In the center… broken hearted
Stand the lovers… stand old lovers

When it all… when it all… when it all…
When it all starts to fall apart

Windows work to let us see out
When it all starts to fall apart
Hours click by and there’s little left to doubt
When it all starts to fall apart
So I’ll ask you again why have I come back through
These doors and these hallways that brought me to you
You say no reason, no reason, but no reason’s isn’t true
When it all starts to fall apart
When it all starts to fall apart

When it all… when it all… when it all…
When it all starts to fall apart

And counting to ten, it’s like a number of things
I get confused in the middle, then I put it away
I look around for explanations, something that relates
To blanket my sorrow, to understand my fate
But wait… but wait

The paper yellows and the ink turns to gray
When it all starts to fall apart
Memories and wish lists all show their age
When it all starts to fall apart
So I wonder aloud what the words used to say
Of the songs and the poems of our glory days
First the whispers become quiet, then the quiet fades away

11. Lovin Ground
(Demel)

Stranded by the wishes of horses
Reading books for English courses
Teenager dreams with my eyes on the ground

Blinded by malevolent forces
Kissed good-bye with no remorses
Childhood memories planted deeply in the ground

And you hid your feelings so well
And I put them high on the shelf
And they were rich with desires only foolin
Only foolin themselves

Now we walk in grown-up shoes
Occasional nightmare or two
Shipwrecked survivors with our feet on the solid ground

You wrote me a poem in your way
I read it now two or three times a day
You’re carrying a baby with your feet on the ground

12. Door of Love
(Roper)

I’m standing at the door of love
Can’t you hear me knocking
Yea, I’m standing at the door of love
Knock, knock, knocking
And won’t you let me in
I’m tired and I’m lonely
Standing at the door of love

You’re such a pretty house
With big blue windows
And trees that seems to dance
Whenever the wind blows
Come on let’s take a chance
So it is and so it goes
Standing at the door of love

And you wonder it is and you wonder what I do
And you wonder and you wonder how it’ll all affect you
And I can make no promises
But I tell you this as sure as I’m standing here
Given half a chance I expect to give my heart to you

With a pencil in your hand write it down write it down
(In the middle of the night you’re uptight, so uptight)
You don’t understand write it down put it down
(You heard it calling you, calling you, calling you)
And the paper there beneath
You can’t breath, you can’t breath
(In the darkness and the dread)

It’s not easy when you try to speak you can’t breathe
The point of this discussion is beyond all your dreams
Affairs of the heart aren’t always what they seem
So you write in your diary
Come let me see
Wild in your thoughts
Please let it be
Is this love for me
And like a promise standing in the rain
That things may never be the same

13. Carpenter Song
(Roper)

If I had a hammer, a jigsaw that stammered
A three-legged ladder and some glue
An old monkey wrench, and a wobbly work bench
Aluminum shutter and some screws
A carpenter’s protractor, and maybe a small john deere tractor
A ten penny nail or two
Then I’d build you forever a house that would never
Go falling down all around you

Well if I had a skillet and some kids I could will it
A coat rack or an electric range
An old cardboard box full of what-have-you-nots
A set of matched dishes, now that’d be strange
A yard ornament made of wood, a little engine that could
An overstuffed chair, something blue
Then I’d put em all together in a house that would never
Go falling down all around you

Well if we could sleep on the same pillow
If we could dance like a weeping willow
I’d read you poetry or I’d sing to you right out loud
Or tell some old bedtime stories
Of the war years or the glories
Bust my buttons, man you know that I’d be so proud
We’d do that birthday thing with Jesus
Get an old cat what sneezes
Put our picture upon the mantel, just we two
And I’d build your forever a house that would never
Go falling down all around you

Well if I had a season, or a chance at some reason
A little insight or maybe just a clue
Then I’d write it all down and post it around
Then maybe I’d remember what I’s supposed to do
And if I still had my virtue and I never ever ever hurt you
And all our dreams were still there high up in the sky
Then I’d build you forever a house that would never
Go falling down all around you

14. With or With
(Roper)

Cry, take your time
Cry, let it be
Cry, you have every right
With or with, with or with, with or without me

Dance, take your time
Dance, let it be
Dance, you have every right
With or with, with or with, with or without me

Dream, take your time
Dream, let it be
Dream, you have every right
With or with, with or with, with or without me

Sing, take your time
Sing, let it be
Sing, you have every right
With or with, with or with, with or without me
